      <image:title>About - A brief history of me.</image:title>
<image:caption>I have always been, and always wanted to be, a creator of ‘things’. I always enjoyed and took great satisfaction from working with my hands and my imagination. When I was young it was model boats made from wood and glue, airfix kits, K-nex vehicles, bows and arrows made in my grandparent’s garden. As I grew older it was an engineering degree, long afternoons in the workshops making contraptions and gadgets. When I went to my first professional engineering design jobs it was prototypes and mechanisms and products and all manner of gadgets. As I progressed, my professional work became gradually more about management, spreadsheets, meetings, graphs and presentations, audits and inspections. As my career developed, it took me further and further from the thing that got me into engineering in the first place. The desire to create things.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - A couple of years ago, my work went part time, and I realised I had the time, and the opportunity, to do something creative again. I found my way to writing. I have always loved to read, and always wanted to write. But writing alone was not enough, trading one desk job for another. I needed to make stuff, I wanted to make something beautiful and functional, art that serves a purpose. That is how I stumbled across bladesmithing, an ancient craft, truly one of the oldest in all of human existence. Blades were some of the first tools made by living beings, so ancient they weren’t even human yet. The first stone blade was made by our ancestors sometime over 3 million years ago. There is nothing in our history as deeply embedded as the making and using of blades, except, possibly, the hammer. for without a hammer, you cannot make a blade.</image:title>

<image:title>About - And so I went to a one day lesson on knifemaking, and from the first time I laid a hammer on hot steel, I was hooked. I was stuck, trapped without hope in the art of forming steel into shape, harnessing it to your will. The roar of the forge, the heat, the blows of the hammer and the glowing metal moving around, its completely intoxicating. The class was being run by Steve Nowacki, a champion bladesmith and superb artist. After the first session he came up to me with a knowing grin and said ‘You know you will never escape this right? I can see it, you are already lost.’ I smiled back and lied that I was in control of my own life choices, but I knew he was right, he could see it in me straight away. We’ve been friends ever since, and he is still smug about it.</image:title>

<image:title>About - When I started writing, I suppose it was inevitable it would have something to do with bladesmithing. My first series, ‘The Light of the North saga’, is a saga of a mythical sword, and the legendary warrior-smith who wielded it. Set in a fictional alternate history of the end of the Viking age, against a backdrop of a climactic struggle between the Norse and the Christian states of western Europe, a struggle for conquest and survival. As the Norse world falls apart, a sword is forged that has the future of the people tied to it by fate, and by the gods, or so the seer tells it. Ljós a Norðan, ‘The light of the north’, the sword becomes the symbol of the resistance, but a sword is nothing without a hand to wield it, and from the chaos a reluctant hero emerges to bear it, and gives the people their last great weapon; hope.</image:title>

<image:title>About - Do not weep for me when I am gone Do not dwell with tender thought on lazy days gone by Do not ponder if you could have saved me from the anvil and the pen For nothing could save fate’s hand from guiding me there again Do not let your heart grow heavy with love’s lost hope Do not spend your day’s long hours staring forlorn at the sky Do not blame the self whose image reflected in the glass you see For I’m only in the workshop, and I’ll be back in time for tea</image:title>

      <image:title>Bladesmithing projects - Materials</image:title>
<image:caption>I have a workshop full of interesting and high quality materials. I can also source specific materials, within reason, from anywhere the world. You just need your knife handle made from New Zealand Swamp Kauri? That can be done. Or maybe you have something you want included in the knife. Perhaps you have a piece of mammoth tusk your grandfather left and you want it used in the handle? No problem. I get the pattern welded, modern damascus billets that I forge my knives from made in the UK by some of our best bladesmiths. Nothing cheap, mass produced, off the shelf or made abroad. Every piece is hand-made to my specification so it is the highest quality, and patterned just way way I, or you, want it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bladesmithing projects - A beautiful tool</image:title>
<image:caption>Its essential to me that my projects are visually and artistically interesting and unique. But its not enough. These are all tools, everything I make has to work, and work for a long time, be repairable and easy enough to live with. I don’t compromise on techniques or manufacturing methods to look pretty. I’ve trained with some of the best bladesmiths in England and studied the art relentlessly. The steel I use is high quality pattern welded or mono-steel billets made specifically as knife steel, heat treated in a top of the line electric furnace for consistency and optimum material properties, and carefully hand finished so that the blades are hard, tough and durable. I use carbon steels and stainless steels depending on preference. I use a mixture of tried and tested modern and traditional handle and fixture making techniques and make my own sayas to fit each blade if one is required. I make blades I want people to use. I use mine all the time, here they are, these are not just wall hangers, these are tools made to be used.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bladesmithing projects - Pricing, availability and time</image:title>
<image:caption>So how do you get your paws on one of these knives? how long will it take, and of course… how much will it cost. Project book and ordering: I will take on only a handful of paid projects a year. If you are interested, just go to my contact page and send me an email. we can discuss your needs. I’m happy to have prospective buyers around to my workshop to discuss it further, look at materials and techniques, and sketch concepts and ideas. In fact I prefer that a workshop visit happens, as you always get better discussions in person. From first discussion to completion will entirely depend on the project, but minimum 3 months. Good work isn’t quick, and I don’t rush. Cost: My pricing is not fixed but is extremely simple. It is the cost of the materials that are used in the project, plus the time I expect to spend on the project for which I charge £15 an hour. If I over-run, that’s my problem not yours, prices are final. If I have to get specialist outside services, like engraving etc. then that will be extra. So how much will a project actually cost!!! anything from £300 for a straightforward single chef’s knife without saya to £3000+ for a complex multi piece set with sayas and very fancy steel and expensive materials/precious metals. here is a page with some examples for reference</image:caption>

      <image:title>Books - The Hero</image:title>
<image:caption>Every great weapon needs a hero to wield it. In the time of his people’s greatest need, a reluctant hero emerges and gives the Norse their last great weapon: hope. Gjaldir, the legendary warrior smith and champion of the Norse. The saga tells of a mighty warrior, who in the despair and destruction of the crusades, forges himself a final blade, a weapon fit for the gods, with the magic of the dwarves wound into it, and carries it into the battle for the future of his people.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Books - The legend</image:title>
<image:caption>The Icelandic sagas speak of a magical blade, forged in the darkness of the northern crusades, a blade said to be blessed by Odin himself, a shining sword forged from the heart of a fallen star. The sword, blazing like the sun when it is drawn for battle, is the light and the hope of the Norse people, the light of the north. The legend says as long as the sword is wielded by a Norseman true and brave, that the Norse people have a future. A sword said to have a core of blazing light lined with fire and a rim of smoke swirling with the souls of its victims, lost to time.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Pricing - Single chef’s/kitchen knives</image:title>
<image:caption>A single mid-sized chef’s knife without any major complications or strange design features will take me around 20 hours to design, make and finish. Handle, bolster and blade materials will range from £50-100 for regular ‘high quality’ but not very special/expensive materials, like a walnut handle and plain steel blade, to £200 for rare woods and pattern welded steel blades. Cost also scales with size of knife. A 6” chefs knife would cost between £300 and £500 depending on design complexity and materials. The knife on the left would be around £450 as an example.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Pricing - More complex knives and sayas</image:title>
<image:caption>Adding complexity naturally adds time and cost. for the fish knife, the bolster is layered, forged, shaped bronze that on its own took over half a day to make. The blade is very long and very thin, which takes much longer to forge and grind correctly, and and a general rule, a saya takes around 10 - 15 hours to make and finish depending on size, so costs £150-200 + material cost. This fish filleting knife with saya and specialist damascus steel, took around 50 hours to make including a lot of design time. The materials cost around £200, so a highly specialised unusual knife like this would cost £800-900 and up. The stranger the concept, the longer it will take to design and get right. I love doing them! But they take more time.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Pricing - Mid range Sets</image:title>
<image:caption>This is my personal knife set. practical, simple, with a common theme and some minor complexities like using forged layered bronze bolsters. A 5'“ petty knife, 6” chef’s knife and 7” slicer. There are some savings to making multiple knives together of course, using common design, materials and doing processes together. This set would be ~£900-1000 as shown, ~£1500 with sayas.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Pricing - High end knife sets</image:title>
<image:caption>Maybe you have something very special in mind, and can afford it. Something using very rare or expensive materials, or outrageously complex and beautiful patterned steel. Custom and complex design. something that will really make a statement, or provide the gift of a lifetime on a very special occasion. or maybe you just want to treat yourself. The set on the right was a wedding gift and took nearly a year to make. The steel is feather pattern steel made by the best damascus maker in the country. The sayas are made from a single block that was built with copper spacers from a single slab of multi-colour english oak burl, and metallic blue resin, to resemble a coastline. A set of this complexity, design difficulty, finishing quality and material expense will cost £2000-2500 and up.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Pricing - Desk swords</image:title>
<image:caption>I think these are my favorite knives to make! elaborate and artistic letter openers, you can really have fun with the design and concept of these, because cutting open envelopes is not very taxing on a blade. You can really make a statement, use a lot of different forms and inspirations and have something on your desk that will be both very pleasing and satisfying to use, but also give your desk a bit of ‘bling’ that will be the envy of your visitors. The two examples on the left are Japanese inspired 4.5” letter openers with matching sayas. The top one is made from two tone blackwood and the blade is a san-mai laminated high contrast hardened carbon steel. The blade pattern matches the saya, and resembles a sunlight over mountains. It is my personal desk sword. The lower knife is a Katana inspired blade with blackwood handle, Titanium damascus guard and high carbon polished steel blade, with matching saya. That blade was also made with a stand in the shape of the inital of the new owner. These knives are complex to make, and require a higher level of fit and finish than a kitchen knife, and use the very best materials. Each of these would be around £600-800, with a stand adding around £100-150 depending on design and material.</image:caption>
